Did everybody see this deleted scene? It's on the Bluray set of Season 2, but Mazzara said it could be considered canon, but as somethin they did that ended up not bein shown. He needed a strong, fresh start for Season 2, so this (originally the first episode of Season 2) got pushed into "tacked on" status at the end of Season 1, continuity-wise. But Mazzara confirmed it could be viewed as "yes that happened".
After CDC, they are outta ideas for where to go & low on fuel & supplies. Rick decides to return to the Vatos gang at the nursin home cuz they became friends. But when they get there, all their new friends are dead, even the elderly. There are great Daryl moments & the next interaction between him & Carol. He tells the kids to hush cuz they don't kno if zombies are there & Sophia keeps makin scared sounds. He rounds on her angrily & tells her again to be quiet. Carol looks at him like he's a threat (after Ed, an angry tough guy is gonna make her wary) & she speaks up to defy him anyhow & protests that her scared daughter is just a child.
To me, this scene shows that so far, Daryl is stayin with them cuz Merle is gone & he doesn't wanna be alone; but he doesn't like or feel a part of them yet, so he snaps alot. This exchange with Carol makes the beginnin of Daryl's changes more obvious. When he sees this group & this mother desperate to find the lost little girl, he suddenly wants to be with ppl like that. He's still sure they won't accept or respect him, but he is moved to find Sophia. I can't call it a "he loves kids" motivation, cuz he had no interest in interactin with Carl. Obviously he does like kids, Judith showed us that; but I thnk Daryl had to grow into the man who took charge to save & feed newborn Judith. It all began with Carol's obvious love & care for Sophia.
This deleted scene also shows Daryl bein smart, to the surprise of Andrea & the rest of the group. It is prob the seed of them startin to see him as more than just some "dumb violent redneck". If ya don't have the Bluray, I thnk this scene is still on YouTube. Highly recommended.
